Cork on 13th\u00a0Feb 1842 to parents Dennis (Donnchadh Sh\u00edle) and Catherine\u00a0Kelleher. His paternal grandfather was Daniel Lynch, known as D\u00f3nal Dubh, and his paternal grandmother was only known as S\u00edle.<\/h4>\n<h4>D\u00f3mhnall had 8 siblings &#8211; 4 brothers called Jerry, Cornelius, Denis and John; and 4 sisters called Julia, Margaret, Johanna and Joan.<\/h4>\n<h4>Not much is known about his early childhood years however we\u00a0understand that at the age of 10 he attended the newly opened National School in Coolea in the year 1852. After D\u00f3mhnall left Coolea National School in 1857 he spent some time in a preparatory school run by Mr Wall in Macroom.<\/h4>\n<h4>From there\u00a0D\u00f3mhnall went to St. Colman\u2019s College in Fermoy, reputedly being part of the first intake of students, where he met a student called\u00a0Peadar \u00d3\u2019Laoire, who went on to win\u00a0national recognition in Irish revival and national culture re-awakening (An tAthair Peadar \u00d3\u2019Laoire) and who became a lifelong friend. In his final year at St Colman\u2019s,\u00a0D\u00f3mhnall won 3 prizes for prose and translation in a competition offered annually\u00a0to all matriculated students of the Catholic University of not more than four years\u2019 standing, for the best compositions in each subjects.<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-231\" src=\"http:\/\/drlynchballyvourney.ie\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Cork-Examiner-30-July-1864.jpg\" alt=\"Cork Examiner 30 July 1864\" width=\"249\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"http:\/\/drlynchballyvourney.ie\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Cork-Examiner-30-July-1864.jpg 249w, http:\/\/drlynchballyvourney.ie\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Cork-Examiner-30-July-1864-154x300.jpg 154w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 249px) 100vw, 249px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>These awards were reported in The Cork Examiner, Saturday Evening edition, July 30th 1864\u00a0&#8211;<\/h4>\n<h4>\u2022\u00a0 Greek (prose or verse) \u2013 \u201cThe Death of Archimedes\u201d &#8211; 2<sup>nd<\/sup> prize (\u00a33), Daniel Lynch, St\u00a0 Colman\u2019s<\/h4>\n<h4>\u2022\u00a0 Original Latin Prose (\u201cAn account of the Siege of Syracuse by the Athenians\u201d) &#8211; 2<sup>nd<\/sup> prize (\u00a33), Daniel Lynch, St Colman\u2019s<\/h4>\n<h4>\u2022\u00a0 Latin Translation (Extract from Burke\u2019s speech on \u201cConciliation with America\u201d) &#8211; 2<sup>nd<\/sup> prize (\u00a33), Daniel Lynch, St Colman\u2019s<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4>On the basis of these results, when\u00a0D\u00f3mhnall left St Colman&#8217;s he went to the Irish College in Paris from September 20th 1864 &#8211; 1869 to study for the priesthood. While there he studied Rhetoric, 1st and 2nd Philosophy, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Theology where he received many grades of distinction across all of these subjects.
