{"id":48,"date":"2014-04-30T10:03:51","date_gmt":"2014-04-30T09:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/drlynchballyvourney.ie\/wordpress\/?page_id=48"},"modified":"2014-07-26T10:11:28","modified_gmt":"2014-07-26T09:11:28","slug":"dr-lynchs-military-career-part-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/drlynchballyvourney.ie\/wordpress\/dr-lynchs-military-career-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Dr Lynch&#8217;s Military Career Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><em><strong>The Franco-Prussian War &amp; Onward Travels<\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n<h4>On 25th July\u00a01870, France had declared war on Prussia, and while the French were confident, the Prussians were much more efficient. The French had invaded Prussia initially but were soon forced backwards and during August 1870 were defeated time after time.<\/h4>\n<h4>By 16th August 1870, one third of the French army (180,000) were trapped in the fortress city of Metz while attempting to break through. Napoleon III was defeated at Sedan on September 2<sup>nd<\/sup> and was captured with 104,000 of his men.<\/h4>\n<h4>Three Zouave senior officers, some other officers and other enlisted men went by French Frigate to Toulon to join the French Army in the Franco-Prussian war. Having no time to obtain new uniforms, they fought in their Zouave uniforms. Once the French ship reached Toulon it took some time for the French Government to decide what to do with the men, and in the meantime many more French Zouaves had arrived, and they disembarked on 25th September 1870.<\/h4>\n<h4>The Zouaves were involved in more fighting as the various battles ebbed and flowed in the following months. The people of Ballyvourney did not like this, and they gathered \u00a339 to help pay the tax. When Duke Charles visited as a representative of the French Government, it was a great day for the people of Ballyvourney. Published by Palgrave Macmillan 2008.<\/h6>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Onward Travels<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h4>On arrival in the United States it is believed D\u00f3mhnall worked on the construction of railways near New York and from there he went to New Mexico during a Gold Rush.<\/h4>\n<h4>He spent some time gold mining at Klondyke in the Rockies and also\u00a0in New Mexico. The story goes that he succeeded in making a lot of money at that time.
